Hermann Hesse is the favorite writer of my youth, even widely read in the U.S. (“Steppenwolf”) and in Japan. In 1948, Hesse was awarded the Noble prize of literature. His writings fascinate through intensive descriptions of nature and feelings. I visited his house, the baroque Casa Camuzzi, in Montagnola (Lugano, Ticino) three times. From there, Hesse looked into an exotic, wild garden, above a valley and the lake Lugano. Here he also began to paint watercolors and illustrate his own poems, texts and letters. Here, too, he wrote the novellas about the painter "Klingsor", the "Steppenwolf", "Demian" and the indic novel "Siddhartha". In 1982, I saw the name of Gunther Böhmer, a draftsman who illustrated some of Hesse's books, at the doorbell and immediately felt shifted into the old staircase with the araucaria from the novel "Steppenwolf".
