Gestern spazierten wir bei strahlender Nachmittagssonne durch den Park des Schlosses Nordkirchen, das westfälische Versailles genannt, 20 km von meinem Atelier entfernt. Hier sieht man eine der zahlreichen Statuen mit Licht und Schatten der Frühlingssonne effektvoll beleuchtet.

Yesterday we walked in the bright afternoon sun through the park of the castle Nordkirchen, called the westphalian Versailles, 20 km away from my studio. Here you can see one of the many statues  impressivley illuminated by the sun.

Henris Schuh

Ein von mir aufbewahrter Schuh einer meiner Söhne, Henri, der uns gestern besuchte und der damals, 1987, vier Jahre alt wurde. Es kommt mir so vor, als seien noch Sandkörner von den Spielplätzen darin, so lebhaft ist die Erinnerung.

A shoe that I treasured from one of my sons, Henri, who visited us yesterday and he was four years old in 1987. It seems to me as if the grains of sand from the playgrounds are still in it, so vivid is my memory.

Atelier-Fenster

Gestern am frühen Abend fing ich an, dieses Bild zu malen, zur Abwechslung auf Holz, was sehr viel feinere Pinselstriche ermöglicht, da keine störenden Poren einer Leinwand vorhanden sind. Ich mußte mich beim Malen beeilen, da die Dämmerung immer mehr zunahm. Somit malte ich erst Häuser, Baum und Himmel und konzentrierte mich später, als es allmählich dunkel wurde, auf Fenster, inneren Holzrahmen, Holzvertäfelung sowie kleines Palettenbild.

Yesterday in the early evening, I started to paint on wood for a change, which makes finer brush strokes possible because no pores of a canvas disturb. I had to hurry while painting, as the dusk grew on. So I first painted houses, trees and the sky and later, when it gradually became dark, I concentrated myself on the window, interior wood frame, wood paneling and the small range image.

David war zu Besuch, und ich brachte ihn zum Bahnsteig in Lünen (Westfalen), wo er den Zug nach Hamburg nahm, eine seiner vielen Lebensstationen in Europa.

David was visiting us, and I brought him to the platform in Lünen (westphalia), where he took the train to Hamburg, one of his many stages of life in Europe.

Im Atelier

Heute malte ich diese Szene im Atelier. Die Unmittelbarkeit der Anschauung und die Improvisation bei der Darstellung der Gegenstände und des Bodens ergeben einen Eindruck, eine Impression, die Gefühle und Gedanken während des Malens authentisch mitschwingen lässt, was eine Verwandlung des Raums auf dem Bild zur Folge hat. Nicht wie ich den Raum gewöhnlich sehe, sondern wie während drei Stunden Malens die genauere Wahrnehmung und die scheinbare Verlangsamung der Zeit deutlich werden, zeigt die Eigenartigkeit des Bildes.

Today, I painted this scene in the studio. The immediacy of the outlook and improvisation in the representation of objects and the ground gives an impression about feelings and thoughts. The latter resonate authentically, which leads to a transformation of space on the painting. While painting for three hours, I do not perceive the room as usual, but through the more accurate perception and the apparent slowing of time the strangeness of the painting gets conveyed.

Kaffee oder Schokolade

Die junge Frau im Kaffeeladen überlegt noch, wofür sie sich entscheiden soll. Da es draußen immer noch ziemlich kalt ist, scheint diese kleine Kaffeerösterei ein angenehmer Aufenthaltsort zu sein, in dem man möglichst lang eine Entscheidung hinauszögern möchte, um hier bei den Düften nach gerösteten Kaffeesorten zu verweilen.

The young woman in the coffee shop is still deciding on what she should choose. Because it's pretty cold outside, this little coffee roastery seems to be a pleasant place in which you want to defer a decision in order to enjoy the scents of roasted coffee.

Letzter Schnee

Ein schönes Motiv für jeden, der malt. Auf den ersten Blick erscheint es sehr schwer, aber man beachte zwei Regeln. 1.: Die dunklen Farben flächig dünn vorgrundieren. 2.: Mittels Weiß bis zu den Rändern der dunklen Zweige mit der flachen Seite des Pinsels kantig malen, was viel leichter ist, als mit dunkler Farbe die einzelnen Zweige zu „zeichnen“. Die Reihenfolge Hell auf Dunkel sowie fett auf mager, d. h. dünn malend beginnen, später dick malend die Höhungen und Glanzlichter auftragen, ist eine Grundregel der akademischen Malerei.

A beautiful motif for anyone who paints. At first glance, the painting appears difficult but you observe two rules. 1st: prime the dark colours thin. 2nd: Using white, paint edged to the border of the dark branches with the flat side of the brush, which is much easier than "drawing" the individual branches with a dark color. The sequence of light after dark and rich after lean, i. e. starting to paint thin followed by thickly painting the heightenings and highlights is a basic rule of academic painting.

Gasse in Florenz

Erinnerung an eine mittelalterliche Gasse in der toskanischen Stadt Florenz, die zu Ponte Vecchio führt, der Brücke mit den alten Läden über dem Fluß Arno. Wenn man bedenkt, daß diesen Weg vor 500 Jahren Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffael und Donatello gegangen sein könnten, verschmelzen im Auge des Malers Vergangenheit und Gegenwart.

In memory of a medieval street in the tuscan city of Florence, which leads to Ponte Vecchio, the bridge with the old shops over the river Arno. When one considers that 500 years ago, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Donatello could have walked there, past and present merge in the painter's eye.

Malen

Die Farblandschaft der Malpalette lässt mich immer wieder staunen, dabei benutze ich nur die drei Grundfarben sowie Krapplack/Weinrot, Pariserblau, Chromoxydgrün feurig, Saftgrün und eventuell Terra die Siena und Lichter Ocker, plus Schwarz und vor allem Weiß. Durch die Konzentration auf das Mischen der Töne entstehen unbewusst und natürlich völlig absichtslos Formen, sodaß der berühmte Satz von Paul Cezanne einleuchtet: "Die Farbe bestimmt die Form". Im Hintergrund des Bildes sieht man den Rhein bei Nacht, eine Kindheitserinnerung.

The landscape of colours on the palette amazes me again and again, although I am using only the three primary colors and madder / burgundy, Paris Blue, chromic oxide green (fiery), sap green and possibly Terra di Siena, light ocre, plus black and white especially. During the blending of tones unconsciously and unintentionally forms emerge, so that the famous phrase of Paul Cezanne rings true: "The color determines the shape." In the background you can see the Rhine at night, a childhood memory.

Lichtreflexe

Motiviert hat mich für dieses Bild der Glanz auf den Steinplatten und dem Vordach dieses Gebäudes, verstärkt durch die Helligkeit des Schnees. Im Hintergrund sieht man die unteren Stockwerke des 17 Etagen hohen Rathauses der Stadt Lünen (Westfalen), 1960 durch den Politiker und Regierenden Bürgermeister von West-Berlin, Willy Brandt, feierlich eröffnet.

For this painting, I was motivated by the gloss on the stone slabs and the roof of this building, enhanced by the brightness of the snow. In the background are the lower floors of the 17-storey high city hall of Lünen (Westphalia), opened in 1960 by the politician and mayor of West Berlin, Willy Brandt.

Porträt

Vorgestern malte ich mich im Atelier vor einem meiner neuen Bänder-Bilder. Die Unmittelbarkeit der Situation ruft den etwas angestrengten, konzentrierten Gesichtsausdruck hervor, trotzdem ist das Malen nach lebendem Modell eine sehr gute Übung, wenn auch die Farbtöne durch das künstliche Licht etwas verfremdet erscheinen.

The day before yesterday I painted myself in the studio in front of one of my new bands paintings. The immediacy of the situation evokes the somewhat forced, concentrated expression, but painting after a living model is a very good exercise, even if the colors appear slightly distorted by the artificial light.

Ein Erinnerungsbild an Verona, der durch Shakespeares Tragödie berühmt gewordenen Stadt in Italien. Hier trägt eine junge Frau einen schweren Koffer unter den Arkaden am Amphitheater. Vielleicht ist sie Schauspielerin oder Sängerin und trägt ihre Utensilien zur Aufführung. Möglicherweise heißt sie Julia und hat ihren Romeo in der Nähe geparkt.

A memory picture of Verona, the italian city made famous by Shakespeare's tragedy. Here a young woman is wearing a heavy suitcase under the arcades nearby the amphitheater. Maybe she's an actress or singer, wearing her utensils for her performance. Maybe her name is Julia and she has parked her Romeo close by.

Im Münsterland

Wenige Kilometer von meinem Atelier entfernt beginnt schon die weite Parklandschaft, hier eine Impression vom Frühsommer, nur wenige Autos sind unterwegs. Das Licht der beginnenden Dämmerung taucht die Wolkenberge in wunderbare Farben und Formen, und der Blick bis zum Horizont erzeugt bei mir ein unbestimmtes Fernweh und ein Gefühl von unendlicher, großartiger Weite.

A few miles away from my studio begins the vast park landscape, here in this painting an impression in the early summer, with only a few cars on the road. The light of the coming dusk bathes the towering clouds into wonderful colors and shapes, and the view of the horizon creates a vague wanderlust in me and a feeling of endless, great vastness.

Besuch im Atelier

Es kommt vor, daß an Malerei Interessierte mich im Atelier besuchen, in diesem Fall aus Anlass des jährlich stattfindenden Tages der offenen Ateliers in Lünen / Westfalen. Die Stadt liegt landschaftlich sehr schön am Rand des Münsterlandes mit angrenzenden Wäldern, Gutshöfen, Schlössern und der sprichwörtlichen Parklandschaft. Eine Fundgrube für Plain-Air-Maler. Nichtsdestoweniger ist Landschaftsmalerei unter anderem eine Voraussetzung, sich auch an abstrakte Malerei heranzuwagen, was in meinem Atelier betrachtet werden kann.

It happens that those interested in painting visit me in the studio, in this case on the occasion of the annual day of open studios in Lünen / Westphalia. The city is very scenic on the edge of the Münsterland with adjacent forests, estates, castles and the proverbial park. A treasure trove for plain air painters. Nonetheless, for trying one's hand at abstract painting, landscape painting is, among others, a requirement, which can be seen in my studio.

Berlin Märkische Heide

Eine andere Impression von Berlin, diesmal vom Berliner Südwesten, Kleinmachnow, und dort die wunderbare Märkische Heide, eine Straße im Kiefernwald mit im Grünen versteckten Häusern, wo einst in den 30er und 40er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts Menschen wie der Schauspieler Heinz Rühmann wohnten, und meine Mutter im Haus an der linken Seite ihre Jugend verbrachte. Straßenkopfsteinpflaster und sandige Gehwege scheinen seit siebzig Jahren unverändert. Die großen schwarz-grünen Kiefern im schönen Kontrast zu ihren braun-orangenen Stämmen vor dem azurblauen Himmel bieten ein fast südliches Flair. Möge sich diese heitere Stimmung bei meinen Freunden und Besuchern meines Blogs im neuen Jahr fortsetzen.

Another impression of Berlin, this time from southwest Berlin, Kleinmachnow, with the wonderful Märkische Heide, a road in the pine forest with houses hidden in the woods, where once in the 30s and in the 40s of the 20th century people like the actor Heinz Rühmann lived, and my mother spent her youth in the house on the left. Cobblestone pavement and sandy walkways seem unchanged for seventy years. The large black and green pine trees in beautiful contrast to the brown-orange trunks in front of an azure blue sky offer an almost mediterranean flair. May this cheerful mood stay with my friends and visitors of my blog in the new year.

Berlin Alexanderplatz

In dieser Woche eine weitere Erinnerungsreise, diesmal nach Berlin zur S-Bahn-Unterführung am Alexanderplatz. Das Sonnenlicht strahlt hinein und läßt die Gitarrenspielerin und den kleinen Jungen im Schatten. Berlin Alexanderplatz, Titel des berühmten Romans von Alfred Döblin, ist auch Kindheitsstätte meines Vaters in den 20er und 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts, somit für mich ein Ort voller phantasiereicher Einfühlung. Ich wünsche allen Freunden und Besuchern meines Blogs friedliche, schöne Weihnachtstage.

This week another journey, this time to Berlin to the subway at Alexanderplatz. The sunlight shines, the guitar player and the little boy remain in the shadow. Berlin Alexanderplatz, the title of the famous novel by Alfred Döblin, is also my father's childhood place in the 20s and 30s of the 20th Century, so for me, a place full of imaginative empathy. Now I wish all friends and visitors of my blog peaceful, merry Christmas.

Vernissage

In der vergangenen Woche wurde die Ausstellung von Gemälden einer meiner ehemaligen Malschülerinnen, Malgorzata Hartmann, eröffnet. Hier scheint eine junge Besucherin förmlich in ein Bild hineinzugehen, und, wie auf Ausstellungseröffnungen üblich, das obligatorische Sektglas in der Hand haltend.

In the past week, the exhibition of paintings of one of my former students, Malgorzata Hartmann, opened. Here, a young visitor seems to formally enter into an image, and, as usual on exhibition openings, holding the obligatory glass of champagne in hand.

Gestern und vorgestern unternahm ich im Atelier eine Phantasiereise in eine südliche Gegend, nach Italien zum Gardasee. Gibt es bei Minustemperaturen Schöneres als die Farben des Südens zu mischen und für einige Stunden darin zu schwelgen, bis die ersten Schneebilder kommen?

Yesterday and the day before yesterday, I undertook a fantasy journey into a southern landscape, to the Lake Garda, Italy. Is there something more beautiful than to mix the colours of the south and to revel in it for a few hours until I paint the next paintings which show snow?

Kaffeekanne und ich

Gestern malte ich im Atelier meine Kaffeekanne, und siehe da, ich spiegelte mich in ihr, ebenso verschiedene Gegenstände auf dem Zeichentisch und im Hintergrund. Der Glanz der silbernen Kanne bietet viele malerische Herausforderungen. Ein schönes Motiv auch für ein großes Bild.

Yesterday I was painting in my studio a coffee pot, and lo and behold, I am reflected in it, as well as various objects on the drawing board and in the background. The glamor of the silver pitcher offers many scenic challenges. A beautiful motive for a large painting.

East Village, New York

In dieser Woche reiste ich in der Phantasie nach New York, um eine Erinnerung an den Roman "Großstadtjunge" von Herman Wouk, der in New York spielt und den ich als 13-jähriger las, aufzufrischen. Realität und Phantasie vermischen sich am besten in der Literatur und in den Farben der Malerei, im Licht an einer Hauswand.

This week I traveled to New York in my imagination to refresh my memory of the novel "city boy" by Herman Wouk, which plays in New York. I had read this book as a 13-year-old boy. Reality and fantasy mingle best in literature and in the colors of the painting, in the light on a wall.

Abendliche Straße in Lünen, Westfalen

Vorgestern Abend fuhr ich, wie so oft, auf dieser Straße in Lünen, der Cappenberger Straße. Licht und Atmosphäre motivierten mich, ein Bild davon zu malen.
