Ein schöner Gang ist zur Zeit auch der in die Stadtgalerie Lünen, die sich über dem Hansesaal befindet. Dort stellen über zwanzig Lünener Bildende Künstler, darunter auch ich, ihre Arbeiten aus. (Bis 8.1.2014, Öffnungszeiten Mo.–Do. 9–16 h, Fr. 9–13 h und an den Wochenenden.)

Traffic

Danke auch Dir, Willi von Keitz, für den Titel dieses weekly paintings gestern abend. Zwar ist diese Malerei während des Malens losgelöst von gegenständlichen Vorstellungen, und konkrete Arbeits-Motivation sind nur Farbklänge und Strukturen, jedoch sucht der Mensch Gekanntes und Erinnertes wiederzuerkennen, um nicht aus den „Gewissheitsstrukturen der Alltage“ (Leo Navratil) herauszufallen. So ist der Titel „Traffic“ verständlich, denn man könnte auf dem Bild Autoscheinwerfer und Rücklichter erkennen.

At this point, I would like to thank all those responsible for having received the Kulturpreis ( “culture prize”) 2013 of the city Lünen (westphalia).
Thanks to you, too, Willi von Keitz, for the title of this weekly painting. Although this way of painting is detached from figurative perceptions while painting – and concrete work motivation are only colour tones and structures –, however, man tries to recognize the known and the remembered, so as to not fall out of the “structues of certainty of everyday life“ (Leo Navratil). This way the title “Traffic“ is understandable, since one may spot headlights and taillights of a car.

Die Schauspielerin Margarita Broich …

… eröffnet am 10. Oktober anlässlich des Kinofestes in Lünen (Westfalen) eine Ausstellung mit Fotoarbeiten, auf denen sie Schauspielerkollegen wie Otto Sander in Drehpausen oder privat künstlerisch anspruchsvoll ablichtete. Margarita Broich hatte seinerzeit Fotografie in Dortmund studiert, bevor sie an verschiedenen Theatern in Berlin und im Fernsehen zur Schauspielerei wechselte. Ich freue mich, daß mein Porträt von ihr in Kürze in ihren Besitz übergeht.

On the 10th of October, the actor Margarita Broich  opens an exhibition of photographic works in celebration of the cinema festival in Lünen (Westphalia), where she displays artistically demanding photographs—taken between takes or in private—of  fellow actors like Otto Sander. Margarita Broich once studied photography in Dortmund before she switched to acting, joining various theaters in Berlin and working for television. I am pleased that my portrait of her will soon be handed over.

Porträt IV

In dieser Woche habe ich Barbara Höpping, Journalistin und langjährige Fördervereinsvorsitzende des Heinz-Hilpert-Theaters in Lünen (Westfalen) porträtiert.
Vor genau zwanzig Jahren berichtete sie als erste über mein neu gegründetes Atelier in Lünen und kommentierte in den folgenden Jahren viele meiner Ausstellungen. Herzlichen Dank dafür!

This week I have painted a portrait of Barbara Höpping, journalist and long-time chairman of the friends association of the Heinz Hilpert Theater in Lünen (Westphalia).

Abi-Feier in Lünen (Westfalen)

Am Freitag fand die große Abitur-Feier des Gymnasiums Altlünen mit Zeugnisübergabe an 112 Schüler, sehr guter Moderation der Abiturienten Julian Beimdiecke und Marie Blaszczyk, Show- und Musikeinlagen von Schülern und Lehrern, Filmvorführungen und anschließendem Büffet sowie Tanzen statt. Auf dem Bild gehen mein Sohn Rudolf, links, und ein weiterer Schüler nach einer kleinen Pause in frischer Luft wieder in den Festsaal, vorbei an Theater, Hansesaal, Stadtgalerie, Stadt-Hotel und Rundsporthalle der Stadt Lünen (Westfalen).

On Friday, the Abitur graduation ceremony of the Gymnasium Altlünen was held. 112 diplomas were handed out. The professional moderation was held by the high school graduates Julian Beimdiecke and Marie Blaszczyk, who announced shows and musical performances of students and teachers, including film screenings. Buffet and dancing followed. In the picture, my son Rudolf, left, and another student take a small break in the fresh air, past the theater, Hansesaal, city gallery, city hotel and the round sports hall of Lünen (Westphalia).

In Essen, Ruhr

Hier spazieren zwei meiner Söhne, Henri und Rudolf, über die Rüttenscheider Straße in einem südlichen Stadtteil der heimlichen Hauptstadt des Ruhrgebiets, Essen (Nordrhein-Westfalen), in dem sich die Philharmonie und das weltberühmte Folkwang-Museum befinden, an glänzenden Karossen, exklusiven Läden, Restaurants und Kunstgalerien vorbei.

Here, two of my sons, Henri and Rudolf, are walking along the Rüttenscheider street in a southern suburb of Essen (Northrhine Westphalia), the secret capital of the Ruhr district, in which the philharmonic hall and the world famous Folkwang museum of art are located. They passed shiny cars, exclusive shops , restaurants and art galleries.

The Houses of Parliament

Heute eine Zeichnung, die ich bei Sichtung meiner Mappen fand. Im Alter von 14 Jahren hatte ich sie angefertigt. Als junger, leidenschaftlicher Zeichner von Pflanzen, Tieren und Landkarten standen nun Gebäude im Fokus, da meine Familie an den Niederrhein gezogen war, wo ein historisches Wasserschloss in Ringenberg und ein mittelalterliches Rathaus in Bocholt meine Phantasie auch im Zeichenwettstreit mit meinem Jugendfreund Ulrich P. Ecker beflügelten.

Today, I found this drawing while looking through my folders. At the age of 14 I had drawn it. As a young, passionate illustrator of plants, animals and maps, buildings were now important, as my family moved to the Lower Rhine, where the historic moated castle Ringenberg and a medieval town hall in Bocholt spurred my imagination in the drawing contest with my childhood friend Ulrich P. Ecker.

Besuch aus Berlin

Nach 40 Jahren Unterbrechung besuchte uns meine Berliner Freundin und Studienkommilitonin von 1970, Heidi, in Lünen (Westfalen). Sie begleitete mich zur alten Kaffeerösterei, in der ich mit der Künstlergruppe Acht eine Finissage unserer Malereien und Fotografien (Thomas Ohm, Klaus Möller, Ria Maris und ich) ausrichtete. Hier macht Heidi mit mir eine Zigarettenpause, und wir genießen die strahlende Sonne, immer noch erstaunt über unser Wiedersehen …

After 40 years of interruption, my girlfriend and fellow student, 1970, from Berlin visited us in Lünen (Westphalia). She accompanied me to the old coffee roastery where we (Thomas Ohm, Klaus Möller, Ria Maris and I) hosted a closing event by the group Eight with paintings and photographs. Here, Heidi and me take a cigarette break, and we enjoy the bright sun, still amazed by our reunion ...

Im Schlosspark Nordkirchen

Gestern spazierten wir bei strahlender Nachmittagssonne durch den Park des Schlosses Nordkirchen, das westfälische Versailles genannt, 20 km von meinem Atelier entfernt. Hier sieht man eine der zahlreichen Statuen mit Licht und Schatten der Frühlingssonne effektvoll beleuchtet.

Yesterday we walked in the bright afternoon sun through the park of the castle Nordkirchen, called the westphalian Versailles, 20 km away from my studio. Here you can see one of the many statues  impressivley illuminated by the sun.

Henris Schuh

Ein von mir aufbewahrter Schuh einer meiner Söhne, Henri, der uns gestern besuchte und der damals, 1987, vier Jahre alt wurde. Es kommt mir so vor, als seien noch Sandkörner von den Spielplätzen darin, so lebhaft ist die Erinnerung.

A shoe that I treasured from one of my sons, Henri, who visited us yesterday and he was four years old in 1987. It seems to me as if the grains of sand from the playgrounds are still in it, so vivid is my memory.

Atelier-Fenster

Gestern am frühen Abend fing ich an, dieses Bild zu malen, zur Abwechslung auf Holz, was sehr viel feinere Pinselstriche ermöglicht, da keine störenden Poren einer Leinwand vorhanden sind. Ich mußte mich beim Malen beeilen, da die Dämmerung immer mehr zunahm. Somit malte ich erst Häuser, Baum und Himmel und konzentrierte mich später, als es allmählich dunkel wurde, auf Fenster, inneren Holzrahmen, Holzvertäfelung sowie kleines Palettenbild.

Yesterday in the early evening, I started to paint on wood for a change, which makes finer brush strokes possible because no pores of a canvas disturb. I had to hurry while painting, as the dusk grew on. So I first painted houses, trees and the sky and later, when it gradually became dark, I concentrated myself on the window, interior wood frame, wood paneling and the small range image.

Der englische Freund

David war zu Besuch, und ich brachte ihn zum Bahnsteig in Lünen (Westfalen), wo er den Zug nach Hamburg nahm, eine seiner vielen Lebensstationen in Europa.

Im Atelier

Heute malte ich diese Szene im Atelier. Die Unmittelbarkeit der Anschauung und die Improvisation bei der Darstellung der Gegenstände und des Bodens ergeben einen Eindruck, eine Impression, die Gefühle und Gedanken während des Malens authentisch mitschwingen lässt, was eine Verwandlung des Raums auf dem Bild zur Folge hat. Nicht wie ich den Raum gewöhnlich sehe, sondern wie während drei Stunden Malens die genauere Wahrnehmung und die scheinbare Verlangsamung der Zeit deutlich werden, zeigt die Eigenartigkeit des Bildes.

Today, I painted this scene in the studio. The immediacy of the outlook and improvisation in the representation of objects and the ground gives an impression about feelings and thoughts. The latter resonate authentically, which leads to a transformation of space on the painting. While painting for three hours, I do not perceive the room as usual, but through the more accurate perception and the apparent slowing of time the strangeness of the painting gets conveyed.
